PATIENT PORTAL

SPRAVATO® is the only FDA-approved nasal spray for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)

SPRAVATO® is a receptor antagonist that is believed to work differently by acting on a pathway in the brain that affects glutamate. Glutamate is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain.

Glutamate is the brain’s most common “go” signal—it helps nerve cells send messages to each other. This is key for learning, memory, and helping the brain adapt and reorganize itself, like when you’re forming new skills or recovering from an injury.

It also plays a big role in brain development and how connections between nerve cells are made. Glutamate and its receptors (like NMDA and AMPA) are being researched for developement into treatments, such as SPRAVATO®, to help with treatment-resistant depression (TRD)

Making a Difference One Patient at a Time

How Spravato® is making real change possible for our patient Maggie!

I started Spravato® a couple of months ago, but I felt the effects almost instantly. I’ve struggled my whole life with depression and anxiety. There were meds and therapy, but nothing really helped—or if it did, it made me feel nothing instead of better. Since a couple of hours after my first session, I’ve basically been a new person. I can still experience emotions, but now joy is one of them! I know my problems—and the world’s problems—are still there, but I feel more able to tackle them because I can get out of bed in the morning and take care of my body and my family. (I know that sounds like a given, but it never was for me before Spravato®.) I’m rediscovering who I am, and now I can make decisions that don’t come from a place of desperation or hopelessness. My husband has noticed the change in me and is starting the process himself because he can see what a (HUGE) positive difference Spravato® has made in my life.

The staff at Integrated Health is amazing. They are compassionate, kind, and supportive, which goes a long way when you’re suffering from depression and anxiety. It feels like visiting an old friend who has never judged you.

Advice/things that have helped me on my Spravato® journey:

  1. The staff recommended Hard Candy, Specifically Cinnamon Candies. Don’t forget them! They work for getting rid of the taste. (The medicine flavor is not terrible, but it’s not great either.)
  2. Try to keep the day (and your session) as calming and soothing as possible. Don’t read the news, watch horror movies, or fight with your partner. Take it easy. Take a bath, give yourself a little treat, watch an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood—whatever gets you into at least a neutral, if not positive, state of mind.
  3. Do some meditating. You don’t have to be an expert or anything, but it’s great to give your mind room to breathe during the session. I’ve used both Headspace and The Gateway Project (on Spotify) to look inward in a gentle way. It helps me stay positive and centered during the “trip” part of the session.
  4. Be curious. Be curious about the experience and about who you are outside of your depression/anxiety. Try new things and shake up your routines. Maybe you like hiking, pineapple pizza, or training dogs to dance—but you never explored those options before because you were in survival mode. Be open to who you could be, not just who you’ve been so far.
