Vestibular Rehabilitation

Everyone has had the sensation of dizziness – can’t see straight, eyes unable to focus, or difficulty standing upright without falling or swaying. Maybe you’ve even experienced your peripheral vision going dark for a few seconds, also known as “tunnel vision”.

Dizziness is common and generally not serious, but is usually a sign of a mechanical problem. Dizziness can occur due to an inner ear disorder, a sign of neck dysfunction, a side effect of medications, or it can be due to a more serious problem such as a brain or heart problem.

Vertigo is a little different, however, and is usually a response to a physiological factor that causes a literal imbalance in your body. Someone experiencing vertigo may report feeling as if they are “spinning” or “rocking” even when they are standing still.

Vestibular rehabilitation will help strengthen the bond between the body, eyes, brain and inner ear with intentionally provoking your symptoms in a safe and controlled manner to improve your brain’s tolerance to what makes you uncomfortable. We use techniques to move the patient’s head through a series of positions to relocate tiny calcium carbonate crystals (also known as “rocks”) that have broken apart and moved where they are not supposed to be. In most cases, if patients continue to perform the exercises they have learned, balance and dizziness problems can decrease significantly or completely disappear.

At Integrated Health of Southern Illinois, we believe you have the right to heal! We are experts at treating vestibular patients and have had outstanding success in as little as only 3 treatment sessions.
